All about Ace Aviation

Where is Ace Aviation located?

WAIRARAPA, New Zealand
The Wairarapa region is situated in the South East corner of New Zealand's North Island. The Wairarapa is only an hour's drive away from New Zealand's capital city Wellington.

MASTERTON
The township of Masterton is located at the foothills of the Tararua Ranges and is essentially an urban town, servicing a large rural area.

What are the runway facilities like?

HOOD AERODROME

  • The local airport in Masterton services the Wairarapa region, and is named after Captain George Hood, a well known New Zealand aviator.
  • The aerodrome is a large, open facility located 400 feet above sea level, which has a sealed runway with lighting - to enable night training - and three grass runways.
  • It is an excellent aerodrome for flight training due to the fact that it is off the main airways routes. The airspace may be freely used for training and pleasure flying up to 9500 feet. This uncontrolled airspace means you pay to FLY, not pay for holding or clearances -as is the case at large busy airfields. We utilise every minute of flying time, so you get value for money.
  • The aerodrome is only 30 minutes flying time from two international airports, and 5 minutes from the mountains, so when you are ready for some advanced training it is on our doorstep.
  • The aerodrome is home to agricultural, vintage, warbird, microlight, homebuilt, gliding and model aircraft operators. The aerodrome also hosts an aviation museum, and a skydiving operator.

Other Frequently asked questions:

How long does it take to complete the training required for a PPL?

  • If you fly regular lessons (minimum one flight lesson per week) you will complete the training in 18 to 24 months.

How long would it take to complete the training required for a PPL if I was to be a full time student?

  • As a full time student your day would begin at 9.00am and finish at 4.00pm, 5 days a week. This should enable you to complete the PPL in 3 to 4 months.

If I trained part-time what cost do I need to budget for each lesson?

  • Allow approximately $160 to $220 per flight lesson. The initial lessons will be less than this as there is no aircraft involved.

Do I have to pay for lesssons up front?

  • No, you can pay as you go, or if you wish a lump sum may be paid in advance to receive a 5% discount. This account must be in credit prior to undertaking any lessons.

More Frequently asked questions:

Do I have to train in a tailwheel (taildragger) aircraft?

  • No, we do have tricycle aircraft available for training, but the cost may be slightly more than quoted.

Am I able to hire the aircraft for trips away once I obtain my license?

  • Yes, you sure can.

Do you have access to student funding?

  • No.
